Thapela Tsa Rona: A Celebration of God's Answer to Our Prayers

Thapela Tsa Rona is a Sotho phrase that means "Our Prayers". It is a common expression of gratitude and joy among the Christians in Lesotho, especially during the season of Easter. The phrase is also the title of a popular hymn by the Paul Lechalaba Choir¹, which celebrates God's answer to our prayers through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The phrase reflects the Christian belief that God is our loving Father, who listens to our prayers and responds to them according to his will. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that "prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God" (CCC 2559) and that "we pray as we live, because we live as we pray" (CCC 2725). The Catholic Church also affirms that "prayer is both a gift of grace and a determined response on our part" (CCC 2725) and that "God responds to our prayer by communicating himself to us" (CCC 2728).

The phrase also echoes the biblical passages that describe God as a faithful and generous giver of good gifts to his children. For example, in Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus says: "Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" In James 1:17, James says: "Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change".

The phrase also reminds us of the role of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as our mediator and advocate. The Catholic Church honors Jesus as the Word of God and the Savior of the world, who offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins and who intercedes for us. The Catholic Church also invokes Jesus under various titles that express his role in our salvation, such as Lamb of God, Redeemer, Lord, and King.

The phrase Thapela Tsa Rona can be used as a prayer or a motto for Christians who want to express their gratitude and joy to God for his answer to our prayers. It can also be used as a way of praising or thanking God for his blessings and miracles in our lives. By saying this phrase, we acknowledge that God is our Father, who loves us, hears us, and gives us what we need.
